Chemical
Properties
Mineral acids:
Polyester resistant. Cotton disintegrates in hot
dilute and cold concentrated acids.
|
|
Alkalis:
Polyester is essentially unaffected by weak alkalis,
but less resistant to stronger alkalis, especially at
higher temperatures. Cotton swells in caustics with no
appreciable strength loss.
Organic solvents:
Polyester is generally unaffected, but soluble in
solvents and some phenolic compounds. Cotton is
degraded by some solvents.
Bleaching:
Polyester is unaffected. Cotton is bleached by
hypochlorite and peroxides.
Insects/microorganisms
(mildew, rot): Polyester is unaffected.
Cotton degrades but can be treated with special
finishes.
Laundering/dry cleaning:
Unaffected
Moisture regain:
Polyester is 0.4%; Cotton is 8%
Fastness Properties
(All Grade 4)
Washfastness (ISO 105 CO3)
Waterfastness (ISO 105 E01)
Rub-fastness (ISO 105 X12)
Hypochlorite fastness (ISO 105 N01)
Dry cleaning fastness (ISO 105 D01)
Perspiration fastness (ISO 105 EO4)
Lightfastness (ISO 105 B02)
(These
fastness grades represent minimum performance levels.
In practice the majority of shades will exceed these
levels.)
Thermal Properties
-
Polyester melts at 508 - 526 F (250 - 260 C),
softens at 454 - 490 F (220 - 240 C)
-
Cotton discolours after prolonged exposure to
high temperatures
-
Shrinkage less than 1% at 328 F (150 C)
